The preseason of importance

The preseason of importance. The Saints enter an unusually exciting preseason. A three person QB battle 2025 is set to be the headline of New Orleans’ preseason.

We promise to stop mentioning Derek Carr’s retirement.. But, who will start?

The Saints have a open door to a fierce quarterback competition. With new head coach Kellen Moore, who arrives after winning the Super Bowl as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator.

Preseason Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Preseason Week 2 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Preseason Week 3 vs. Denver Broncos

The Saints’ quarterback room features three main contenders:
  • Spencer Rattler: Entering his second year, Rattler started seven games last season. He showed flashes of potential but struggled behind a depleted roster, finishing 0-7 as a starter.

  • Tyler Shough: The Saints’ 2025 second-round pick is seen by many as the early favorite. Shough brings a prototypical 6’5” frame and a strong arm.

  • Jake Haener: A third-year pro, Haener is recovering from injury but will return for training camp. He started one game last year before being replaced by Rattler.

All three quarterbacks take turns in first-team snaps in the offseason, giving each a shot.

The winner will be the one who commands the huddle and builds chemistry with a talented group of receivers.

New Faces and Key Draft Picks to Watch

The Saints’ 2025 draft class is full of potential impact players:

  • Kelvin Banks Jr. (OT, 1st round): Expected to anchor the offensive line and protect whichever quarterback wins the job.

  • Vernon Broughton (DL, 3rd round): Adds power and depth to the defensive front.

  • Jonas Sanker (DB, 3rd round): Brings versatility to the secondary.

  • Danny Stutsman (LB, 4th round): A playmaker who could see early snaps on defense.

  • Devin Neal (RB, 6th round): A dynamic runner who adds depth to the backfield.

Free agent signings like Brandin Cooks and Donovan Peoples-Jones at wide receiver, along with Chris Olave, give the Saints a strong group of targets.

The defense, now led by coordinator Brandon Staley, will shift to more 3-4 looks, with players like Khristian Boyd and Vernon Broughton in the spotlight.

Kellen Moore’s New Offense: What to Expect

Kellen Moore’s arrival signals a fresh start for New Orleans. After helping the Eagles win a Super Bowl as offensive coordinator.

Moore brings a reputation for creative, aggressive play-calling. He is expected to tailor his system to the strengths of whoever wins the quarterback job.

This year’s three person QB battle is more than just a preseason storyline—it’s a preview of how Moore will shape the Saints’ offense for years to come.
