New Orleans is continuing to fine-tune their roster, announcing the signing of veteran safety Terrell Burgess after a successful tryout during last week’s rookie minicamp.
The move signals the team’s commitment to adding experience and depth to their secondary as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Burgess, a former third-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams, brings with him four years of NFL experience, having played in 43 games with the Rams, New York Giants, and Washington Commanders.
While his primary contributions have come on special teams, Burgess’s versatility and knowledge of multiple defensive schemes made him an intriguing candidate for the Saints’ coaching staff.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the Saints and contribute wherever I can,” Burgess said after learning of his signing. “From the moment I walked into the facility, I felt the energy and focus of this group. I’m ready to get to work.”
The Saints’ decision to sign Burgess came after he impressed coaches during his tryout, showcasing both his athleticism and football IQ. Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who coached Burgess during his rookie season with the Rams, expressed confidence in the safety’s ability to adapt quickly.
“Terrell has always been a smart, tough player,” Staley noted. “He understands what we’re trying to do on defense, and he brings a level of professionalism that’s valuable in our locker room.”
To make room for Burgess and newly signed receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, the Saints released safety Millard Bradford and running back Jordan Mims.
Both Bradford and Mims saw time on the active roster last season, but the team’s latest moves reflect a strategic shift toward experienced contributors.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 202 pounds, Burgess is expected to compete for a key role on special teams and provide depth in the defensive backfield.
His familiarity with Staley’s system could give him an edge as the Saints implement new wrinkles in their defensive schemes.
Burgess’s NFL journey has been marked by both promise and adversity. After a strong start to his rookie year, he suffered a fractured ankle that landed him on injured reserve.
Last season, he spent training camp with the Buffalo Bills but was waived with an injury designation in September. Now healthy, Burgess is eager to prove he can make a difference in New Orleans.
“I’ve learned a lot in my career, and I’m excited for this new chapter,” Burgess said. “This is a team with high expectations, and I’m here to do my part.”
As the Saints continue offseason preparations, Burgess’s signing adds a veteran presence and competition to the safety group.
With minicamp performances already shaking up the roster, fans can expect more moves as the team looks to build a roster capable of contending in the NFC South.
