Jake Haener’s injury sidelines the potential starter at a crucial time. New Orleans is deep in a quarterback battle after Derek Carr steps down.

Haener, competing for the number 1 spot, suffered an oblique strain during organized team activities (OTAs). This injury will keep him out for several weeks, leaving him unable to throw until training camp in July.

Haener, Tyler Shough, and second-year player Spencer Rattler have been competing heavily for the position. The Saints’ coaching staff hoped to see all three fight for the starting job.

Haener’s injury, though not severe, means he misses valuable practice time. This setback could hurt his chances, as Shough and Rattler will get more reps with the first team.

Last season, Haener struggled in his first career start. He completed less than 50% of his passes and was benched at halftime. Rattler replaced him and led the Saints on multiple scoring drives, showing he can handle being under pressure. Now Rattler and Shough are the main contenders. Rattler brings experience from last season, while Shough seems to have all the tools physically, and is favored by head coach Kellen Moore.

Derek Carr and Drew Brees have dealt with similar injuries in the past and proven they can be a little tricky getting over. Haener’s primary focus now is on recovery so he can return strong for training camp.

The Saints’ quarterback position is still wide open. Haener’s injury sidelines him for now, but he could still make a run if he returns healthy. For now, all eyes are on Rattler and Shough as the Saints search for their next leader in the huddle.
